Grand jury returns no re-indictments against high ranking officials
WILLACY COUNTY - The Willacy County Grand Jury met today. It was their last chance to re-indict Vice President Dick Cheney and other high ranking officials, but they returned no indictments, according to the Willacy County District Clerk.
Willacy County District Attorney Juan Guerra, who brought the original indictments, was banned from presenting evidence to the grand jury. State District Judge Manuel Banales appointed a special prosecutor to review the cases.
The indictments against Cheney, Former U.S. Attorney General Alberto Gonzales, Senator Eddie Lucio, Jr. and other Willacy County officials were thrown out earlier this month.
Juan Guerra's term expires December 31. The grand jury will not meet again before then and the incoming Willacy County District Attorney has told NEWSCHANNEL 5 that he will not pursue the indictments.
