Scholarship Fund Tees Up Golf Tournament To Benefit Disadvantaged Youths

EDINBURG - The Dr. Gary W. Whitworth Memorial Scholarship Fund will be hosting its first golf tournament fundraiser on Saturday, November 1, 2008 at Ebony Golf Course in Edinburg.

After his passing in August 2007, the Dr. Gary W. Whitworth Memorial Scholarship Fund was established. Dr. Whitworth devoted 25 years of his professional career as a child psychologist consulting with the Hidalgo County Juvenile Probation Department. During these years, the future of youths in Hidalgo County was one of his utmost concerns. He wanted the youths to be able to have resources readily available to assist emotionally, physically, spiritually and financially in order to become productive members of society.

To be considered for the Dr. Gary W. Whitworth Scholarship Fund, the applicant must fulfill the following criteria:

• Have been in the Hidalgo county Juvenile System
• Show financial need for school related expenses, such as tuition, room and board, books, clothes, transportation, etc.
• Have been referred by a judge, probation officer, social worker, school personnel or attorney

"Four days a week my father would come home from work, jump in the golf cart, and hit the Ebony golf course with either my brother Kevin and I, or his buddies." says Whitworth's daughter Chelsea. "I can't imagine a better format to raise scholarship funds than through playing the game my father loved."

"It's 3-man scramble with a 7:30 am shotgun and a 1:00 pm shotgun" explains Kevin Whitworth. "We hope to generate enough revenue for the Scholarship Fund to make this a feasible annual event."
